Is mixing jewelry (ie: gold and silver) ever okay?
I've always heard this is a major fashion faux paux, but I was watching The Hills the other day and (omg, this sounds so ditzy...lol) Heidi was wearing pearl studs with a silver necklace. Not that Heidi from The Hills is a picture of "fashion perfection" or anything (haha), but it got me wondering. My friend always wears silver rings that she never takes off with a golf necklace she never takes off. Of course you can wear what you want, but I was always taught this was a little tacky (especially those x-and-o bracelets that mix silver and gold...whew. I hate those.) If you were to follow those "unwritten rules of fashion", is it ever okay to mix jewelry? Can you wear gold with silver, pearls with gold or silver, etc? Maybe I'm just a little old fashioned? Just wondering! ![]()

I’ve always heard that silver and gold do not go together. I personally never do it, it just doesn’t look right. Pearl studs and a gold or silver necklace is fine though since they don’t clash.
I really don’t like gold and sliver together, I think it looks to gaudy, but if it’s a simple piece it might be okay.
I would say no……and it dont look good together
It marks you as being low class.
It’s rarely okay. I would say it’s a fashion no. But I guess it all depends on where and how you where it. I guess if you wear gold cuffs and good earrings and a pearl necklace it would be okay but only for formal occasions.
i don’t know but in my opinion, i think its weird to wear silver and gold at the same time. i just think it doesn’t go together :S
but pearls…i don’t think it shud matter if it goes with silver or gold
I havn’t really heard of that rule. And I’m sure not a lot of people have. So go ahead and wear gold and silver. I don’t see that as a sign of bad taste.
My only advice would be that if you really think the rule exists, don’t wear it to any parties or places where you think people are too "fashion conscious".
I wouldn’t. It just looks wrong! Wear one or the other. However, if you have a wedding band in one color, say gold, I think you could wear the rest of your jewelry in silver for a day if it goes better with your outfit.
Wear what makes you happy.Don’t worry what other people think.Be bold,be brave and be unique
Pearls would look good with gold or silver, but mixing gold and silver is beyond tacky.
i wouldnt wear silver and gold together maybe pearls and silver not gold idk dont what u want
Yes, as long as you don’t overdo it..2 OR 3 thin necklaces or bracelets of the mix is cute, but nothing heavy or bulky….
I think the girl on your show can get away with what she did because she didn’t mix silver and gold. She added pearls, which is okay.
I once dated a guy who had pieces of both gold and silver that he really liked. We were goofing around one day and he picked out a wedding band for himself that was kind of swirly white gold, yellow gold, and even a few tiny pave diamonds. Odd as it sounds, it was actually hot! I think that’s the closest you can get to mixing the two and getting away with it.
i personally think it’s tacky. the only thing that i think would be okay in this situation is pearls with silver, not gold.
but do not mix gold and silver. it’s horrible.
I never heard of this rule before. I’ve worn silver earrings and a gold ring before and no one seemed to care. Besides, I’ve
seen earrings, watches… etc. in many jewlery magazines – I
bet tons of people wear those.
I think it depends on how formal the situation is… and the look you’re going for. In general I would stick to matching though… but like most things don’t be afraid to express your individuality. The fashion rule is not to mix, though.
Actually this really isn’t a fashion faux pas it is actually in style. If you ever go into a jewelery store you will see that there are some rings that have both gold and silver in them. It’s called the two-tone style.
